EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
