Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
